Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC), Dehradun

The Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC), Dehradun. Traces its origin to the Prince of Wales Royal Indian Military College, inaugurated on 13th March 1922 by his Royal Highness, Prince Edward VIII the Prince of Wales.
THE BEGINNING
The Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC), is an Inter Service Category 'A' establishment, administered through the Army Training Command (ARTRAC) under the aegis of the Ministry of Defence (MoD). Christened the Prince of Wales Royal Indian Military College, it was inaugurated on 13 March 1922 by His Royal Highness, Prince Edward VIII, the Prince of Wales. It was then located on the premises of the erstwhile Imperial Cadet Corps (also called Rajwada Camp), set amidst 138 acres of lush green countryside, adjacent to Garhi Village in Dehradun Cantonment. During his Address to the first thirty-seven Cadets, the Prince of Wales said, "It is the first few blows on the anvil of the life that give the human weapon the set and temper that carry him through life's battles". The Prince also made reference to the old Indian tradition of 'Guru and Chela'. This relationship of mutual love and reverence has formed the rock bed of RIMC ethos.
HISTORY
RIMC has a long history and rich heritage. Over the years the College has produced many leaders of the society, both military as well as civil. These include four Chiefs of Army Staff and two Chiefs of the Air staff in India; one Commander-in-Chief of the Army and two Chiefs of the Air Staff in Pakistan; scores of officers of General/Flag/Air rank, Commanding Operational Commands, Fleets, Corps , Wings and Divisions and other distinguished appointments on both the sides of the border. Besides, many high ranking civilian dignitaries like Governors, Ambassadors, Ministers and Captains of industry have passed through the hallowed portals of the RIMC. Portraits of such luminaries adorn our walls at strategic places as inspiring beacons for young students of the day.
VISION
The purpose of this Institution was to provide Indian Boys with suitable education and training to ensure a high pass-rate for the Indians being sent to the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, as part of the Indianisation programme of the Officer cadre of the Indian Army. RIMC was not, in fact, a College, but a pre-Sandhurst institution run along the lines of an English Public School. The British believed that to become an Army Officer, if an education in Britain was impossible, a Public School education in India was an absolute necessity. The British believed that a Public School education was particularly necessary for Indian Boys, whose upbringing made them suitable for the rigours and discipline of army life. Hence, with this vision to lay the foundation for the selected young men, the College makes an endeavour to groom young cadets to become selected military leaders of tomorrow. I n keeping with this, it fulfils its role of a feeder institution to NDA, NAVAC, and also enable Cadets to apply for CME & Technical entry (CTW) and any other schemes from where Cadets can join the Defence Services.
WHY RIMC ?
The Rashtriya Indian Military College is a 'Nursery of Leadership' for institutions like National Defence Academy, Khadakvasla, Officers' Training Academy, Chennai, and Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. The College provides Public School education to young boys in the age group of 11½ to 18 years, specially selected through an All India Competitive Examination. A dedicated feeder to the National Defence Academy (NDA) and the Naval Academy (NAVAC), the College aims to send maximum Boys to the NDA/NAVAC. Hence it lays utmost emphasis on complete education and all round personality development of the cadets. However, if the cadet is unable to join the NDA due to rare or unavoidable reasons, he attains the requisite proficiency to go on and do well in any field that he so chooses. There have been a bevy of cadets who have gone on to become bureaucrats, lawyers, engineers, coporate leaders, captains of Industry and journalists, holding the RIMC Flag aloft in all the endeavours they chose to pursue.
THE CAMPUS
Nestled in the salubrious Doon valley in the foothills of the Himalayas, the campus is located within the sylvan surroundings of Dehradun Cantonment. The RIMC has a sprawling Campus of 137 acres; an ideal setting of verdant green and serendipity for developing young minds. Home to multiple species of Flora, the unspoiled and green atmosphere in RIMC is a delight to be in . It houses a miniature India with 250 boys selected from every State, strictly on merit through a written examination, interview and a medical test.
PANORAMA
The Campus has quite a few heritage buildings in Faux Tudor Style, some of them more than a hundred years old. These elegant buildings house the Cadets in Dormitories, with a Mess and Dining Hall for meals; the Education Block with spacious class rooms, well equipped with Smart Classes and Laboratories, manned by a thoroughly professional Faculty, with a teacher student ratio of 1:12.5. Besides, it has many play fields, indoor and outdoor Courts, a 50 mtrs Olympic size Swimming pool replete with a 10 mtrs Diving Pool, Indoor and Outdoor Shooting Ranges and all facilities for co-curricular activities.
AFFILIATION
The College is administered by the Union Ministry of Defence, through the Headquarters Army Military Training Command (HQ ARTRAC). RIMC holds the Limca Book of Records of being the first Military School in India where exams for Class X and XII are conducted twice a year, in the months of May and November. These exams/certifications are recognised by the CBSE. The College offers only Science Stream at the +2 level. However, to prepare the Cadets for the UPSC examination for entry into NDA, Social Sciences are also taught. The curriculum requirements are exacting yet exciting in their variety. Every activity is objective based and precisely timed to mould future leaders and render holistic development.
Periodic tests are held regularly to ensure that the Cadets grasp and assimilate the course of study covered in each month. After the term-end examination, each cadet's academic record is comprehensively analysed and his position in class decided; with curricular and extracurricular achievements of the term being recorded in his dossier. Due weightage is also given to the sessional work done by a Cadet both in terms of class work and homework for his promotion to the next class. Cadets are familiarised with the modern objective type of questions to prepare them to competently face the UPSC Examination for entry into the NDA and NAVAC. RIMC has shown excellent results in sending between 60-90% cadets to NDA from each course.
